(schedule to come)Opening day of IM Softball brought with it great anticipation, especially as the Sons of God were unveiling their new look. It's too bad the captains didn't anticipate getting the ball hit to them in the first inning. Whether it was the multiple unearned runs given to the Centurions, or the many easy fly balls hit on offense, it surely appeared that the Sons of God had slept through their collective alarm, and missed the umpires call, "Play Ball."
But then the third inning came around...
With the help of dynamic due of Seth and Ben Kaiser, along with softball rookies Martin Paul and Thomas Monickaraj, the SOG offense was sparked; and as the song goes, "it only takes a spark to get a fire going." Once it got going, it never stopped. Highlighted by a nine-run inning, in which the first out wasn't made until at least seven runs were scored, the SOG showed once again that late is better than never. In the end, the SOG had scored 17 unanswered runs to win by a margin of 17-4.
"Spotting the Centurions four runs wasn't the plan," remarked reserve outfielder Berkley Reitz, "but with this lineup, we knew it was just a matter of time." And sure enough, time would tell that the SOG will be a force to be reckoned with--but not just on offense...
Starting pitcher Matt Jennings made his debut on the slab and tossed a gem. Constantly ahead in the count, Matt was attacking the hitters, forcing them to get the bat off their shoulders. And no matter who was in the field for the SOG, the plays were being made. First baseman Kevin Austin blocked errant throws, outfielder Jason Reitz brought back the basket catch, and late-season acquisition Sean Smith was there to snag a hot line drive.
The season will be tough and very competitive, but be certain of one thing: the Sons of God will not go lightly.
Matt Jennings was selected as the player of the game.
